The Monticello City Council met March 27 to vote on an electric rate to make the city of Monticello utilities compatible with other power companies to offer to an industrial prospect that is considering locating here.

City Manager Bob Schwartz reported that two helicopters landed in the industrial park two weeks ago, and the investors met with community leaders.

The prospective industry would be a large user of electricity—a larger user of electricity than anything Monticello has ever provided thus far, said Mr. Schwartz.

Mr. Schwartz premised his recommendation with the fact that there was no guarantee the company would locate here. He told the council that by passing this rate, it would be personally delivered to the prospect and the investors interest could be raised once the proposed rate is presented.

Count three charged Mr. Hale with discharging a firearm in a developed recreation site, and count five charged him with tampering with a witness by misleading conduct.

Spring is in full swing, as evidenced by the spring flowers and shrubbery which are abloom everywhere. And, if it’s springtime, it must be close to Easter, which is celebrated this Sunday, April 8.

There will be a community sunrise service on the Square at 7 a.m. Sunday, and many churches have special services planned. In addition, the children really enjoy the fun Easter tradition of hunting Easter eggs.

Last Saturday, Smithboro Baptist Church had a fun day for all with a giant slide, hot dog lunch, and gigantic egg hunt. Above are some scenes from that. Several other churches have egg hunts planned this Saturday, April 7. The shrubbery was just so pretty we wanted all to see.

Bob Yarbrough, a long time resident of Jasper County, has announced his candidacy for Jasper County sheriff.

Mr. Yarbrough and his family are members of the New Rocky Creek Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Commissioners as well as being a volunteer fireman. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Delta State University.

Mr. Yarbrough said he offers a unique combination of knowledge necessary to be an effective sheriff, with more than 27 years of business management and law enforcement experience. Mr. Yarbrough is presently with the Covington Police Department.
